- ?Jurassic World Dominion? Clips Reunite Sattler and Grant; The Giganotosaurus Is Finally Introduced!
Wise people say the worst pain for a parent is burying a child. Hard to disagree with that statement, but the opposite is no picnic either. A child losing a parent at an early age changes their psychology and emotional makeup. Bruce Wayne is perhaps pop culture?s best?and worst?example of the trauma of burying a mom or dad. Matt Reeves? The Batman dives headfirst into that angle of Bruce?s world. Sure, it?s about Riddler terrorizing Gotham City?s corrupt hierarchy, but it also explores the psyche of a young man living in his own personal hell. While filled with scary movie imagery and homages to the genre, The Batman soars when it examines the horror of living with post-traumatic disorder (PTSD). Calling Robert Pattinson?s Bruce Wayne ?emo? is reductive and misses the point. His Bruce spends most of his time as Batman, lives in the Batcave, and flinches at the mere sight of his parents because he?s in pain. Exploring grief and trauma is a recent trend in horror. And after the last several years on this blue ball, who can blame them? What puts The Batman on the same level as Hereditary, Halloween (2018), or Doctor Sleep is its commitment to allowing the main character to wallow. Bruce loses his parents when he?s in elementary school. Making matters worse, he partially blames himself for their deaths. Why would he want to wake up every day and be ?the prince of the city?? At that point, being Bruce Wayne at all is hard enough, let alone being that specific version. We learn his parents died 20 years before the film?s events, but Bruce relives that moment he?s on patrol every night. His pain makes an early moment in the story one of its most poignant and touching. On their way out of a crime scene, lieutenant Gordon tells Batman the mayor?s son found his father?s dead body wrapped in tape. Batman comes to a complete stop when he sees the boy in his room as cops pepper him with questions. This is a man who gets it. He knows what the kid is feeling and what the kid will feel. They?re a part of the same awful club, only there are no cool jackets or membership dues. Only a lot of anger and even more tears as a barrier to entry. At that moment, at least one other person in the room relates to that kid?s personal scary movie. Horror movies usually show us groups of people dealing with their own big bad wolves outside the door. Yes, there?s strength in numbers, but there are also perks to having a support system. However, The Batman illustrates how lonely it is recovering from the kind of trauma Bruce and the mayor?s son suffered. Horror often deals with external forces dragging us into a ring of hades or creating a monster to manifest our internal anxieties. But what if we are the monster? Those on this side of the screen don?t have Michael Myers or a Babadook as approximations. For us, we are our worst enemies while grieving. And so is Bruce. The Batman tells us Bruce is a creature of the night nonstop because it channels his rage. ?I?m vengeance? isn?t just a cute quote for t-shirts; they?re the words of a young man working through many issues. Carrying a burden that heavy for so long extracts a heavy psychological toll. One not measured in dollars or cents but drops of humanity. That?s why Bruce lashes out at Alfred at certain moments in the movie or seemingly cares very little for Selina Kyle?s situation or well-being. He scoffs at Alfred?s ?parental? instincts and sees Selina as nothing more than a means to an end because tearing down his emotional walls makes him vulnerable to hurt. It?s hard opening to any type of emotional pain after losing anyone, let alone parents. At that point, there are two horrors from which to choose: isolation or heartbreak. Neither is particularly pleasant, but at least the former is within one?s control. That compulsion Bruce has in The Batman to detect, investigate, and see all the angles? That?s not just the sign of someone aiming for the ?World?s Greatest Detective? crown. Those are hallmarks of someone living through trauma and doing everything in their power to control every situation. Which, to most people, sounds crazy. How can anyone possibly have a handle on everything life throws their way? After suffering such a horrific loss, that type of logic bears no meaning. The goal is to ensure life never catches you off guard like that ever again. Imagine waking up every day hoping the worst thing to ever happen to you is a nightmare. Imagine waking up every day realizing your dreams are often better than your reality. Eat your heart out, Alanis Morissette. Bruce never gives himself the time, or the permission, to get out of that space. He owns property in a state of mind where every reminder hurts, every memory cuts, and no one helps because they?re not allowed to even try. As Batman, Bruce exposes that very raw nerve every night and channels it into rage or dogmatic dedication to his chosen crimefighting craft. But by the final credits, he realizes one horror begets another. Batman cannot make an actual difference in Gotham until Bruce Wayne allows his scars to heal. Or, at the least, applies ointment and a few bandages to help the healing process. Unlike most horror movies, The Batman states the protagonist cannot continue the cycle of violence while providing him an actual moment of clarity. Major trauma takes time to process, and while no one with two eyes and a brain can say Bruce is truly healed at the end of the movie, he is better. That?s a victory because the man who spends his nights fighting monsters has one less internal one to battle. The Batman is now available on 4K, Blu-ray and DVD. Clips Reunite Sattler and Grant; The Giganotosaurus Is Finally Introduced! - Why Kirby Joining Scream 6 Is A Great Idea
Kirby Reed (Hayden Panettiere) is one of the best parts of Scream 4and while fans of the franchise were glad to see Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), Dewey Riley (David Arquette), and Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) in Scream (2022)audiences would have been thrilled to see Kirby, too. Thankfully, Kirby gets a mention in the fifth movie. Richie Kirsch (Jack Quaid) is on his laptop and there’s a YouTube interview from Bloody Disgusting with Kirby as a Woodsboro survivor. While fans of the franchise are of course thrilled to get to see another Ghostface come to Woodsboro, it’s especially exciting to know that Kirby willl be in Scream 6. Here’s why this is a smart idea. GAMERANT VIDEO OF THE DAY RELATED: Scream 6: What Tropes Can The Franchise Take On Next? Kirby Reed coming back to Scream 6 is an amazing idea because Kirby is such a popular Scream 4 character. Scream (2022) already made fans happy by bringing back Sidney, Gale, and Dewey, and Scream 6 is doing the right thing by bringing back another legacy character. Now, fans have a reason to get even more excited for the new film, as they want to see who Kirby is now and what she’s up to. While fans of course don’t know what kind of part Kirby will play in Scream 6it’s fun to imagine what her role could be. Perhaps Kirby will come back home to Woodsboro and help Gale and Sidney fight Ghostface. This would help cement Kirby as a new final girl, which fans have been waiting for as many felt that Kirby could have taken over after Scream 4 and appeared in several new movies. While Sidney is an ultimate final girl and even Gale can be a final girl, there’s always room for one more, and Kirby has shown that she is tough even to take this horror trope on. Kirby is the exact right kind of character to connect all six movies together. One possible complaint about Scream (2022) is that it kind of ignores the events of Scream 4. While Deputy Judy Hicks (Marley Shelton) is back, this time with her son Wes (Dylan Minnette), she’s the only link between the two films. Otherwise, fans could watch Scream (2022) and feel that the fourth movie hadn’t even happened. Kirby’s return makes it feel like Scream 4 is still a significant part of the horror franchise when sometimes, the movie is ignored in favor of the first two. It’s possible to say that the Scream movies aren’t scary… but with Kirby in Scream 6the new film will at least feel a bit creepy and unsettling. Why? Because Kirby grew up in Woodsboro hearing about Sidney’s story, feeling sure that a killer would never strike again in the small California town. Then Kirby realized that her very own best friend Jill Roberts (Emma Roberts) was behind a new crop of murders, along with Charlie Walker (Rory Culkin) who claimed to be in love with her. Now, if Kirby comes back home when she learns that there’s another Ghostface, she’ll go through the same emotional journey that Sidney has been on: realizing that Woodsboro is rarely safe and that danger is always around. Kirby’s inclusion also does something important: making fans feel like they’ve been heard. While Billy Loomis’s ghost is a frustrating part of Scream (2022)as seeing Skeet Ulrich de-aged is just incredibly cheesy, fans are thrilled about seeing Kirby again. With such a long-running slasher franchise, it’s a great idea to make fans happy because these are the people who have been enjoying these movies for so many years. Ultimately, Kirby means so much to Scream fans because she cracks jokes, she can tell what’s going on without anyone needing to explain things to her, and she seems clever. Such wise characters don’t always appear in horror movies, especially the further that fans get into a slasher franchise, as these characters tend to be cliched, one-note, or otherwise superficial. Kirby is also relatable because she gets scared as Scream 4 goes on, like when Deputy Judy Hicks asks her if Ghostface phoned her and Kirby says, “Is that a bad thing/ Does that mean I’m not gonna live as long as these two?” Judy tells her to watch out for herself and Kirby yells, “Oh my god, did you hear that? I’m gonna be next!” This scene works perfectly as fans see that Kirby is smart enough to know when to be terrified and when to be chill, and she fully understands that she could die at any time. No matter what happens in Scream 6fans can at least rest assured that they will get to catch up with Kirby Reed, and seeing this character again will be totally satisfying. Something that I love about horror, no matter its subgenre, is when it can take something harmless and ordinary?like a rubber ball, or a button, or a VHS tape?and turn it into a symbol of terror. We see this phenomenon play out in horror movies all the time?you can barely mention the Final Destination franchise without someone bringing up that the second installment spooked them out of driving near lumber trucks forever?but what about books that shape how you interact with stuff that really shouldn?t be that scary? Here are five horror novels that, at some point in my life, really made me rethink what sort of stuff I keep lying around my house. The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones Stephen Graham Jones managed to make ceiling fans scary and I?ll never forgive him for it. The Only Good Indians follows a Blackfeet man named Lewis who is followed metaphorically by his past and very literally by a vengeful spirit. The first time Lewis catches a glimpse of what?s stalking him, it?s while he?s on a ladder in his own home, looking down toward the floor through the blades of his ceiling fan. I personally have a ceiling fan right above my bed and for weeks after I found myself just?staring at it, grateful that I get to stay below it. I?ll let my fan?s blades get dusty and gross before I?ll climb up there and risk seeing something unexplainable. IT by Stephen King You don?t need me to tell you that IT?like any of King?s works?is brimming with nightmare fuel. When I think about ITthough, the scene that always gives me the shivers doesn?t take place in the sewers under Derry, and doesn?t even feature Pennywise the Dancing Clown (and no, it?s not that infamous and controversial scene either). Rather, the part of IT that haunts me barely spans two pages. It?s an almost throwaway account that adult Mike Hanlon comes across while researching the history of disappearances in Derry. In it, an old man tells how his wife could hear the voices of dead children coming up through the drain of their kitchen sink. Imagine that you just want to drain the nasty old dishwater out of your sink and while the water drains away you can hear creepy kids auguring your death through the pipes. It?s unsettling as heck. Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill In Heart-Shaped BoxJoe Hill captures that exact spooky feeling that you get when you think you?re seeing a monster in your room but it turns out to be a pile of laundry that you left on a chair. That exact feeling, except without any sort of comforting revelation once the lights come on. Jude spends his time and money collecting morbid memorabilia, and his most recent find?a funeral suit?comes with a major string attached in the form of a killer ghost. Some of the scariest scenes hinge on a single Shaker chair that sits in the hallways outside of Jude?s room. Jude starts to dread what might or might not be in the chair nearly every time he has to leave his bedroom, and the tension is nerve-fraying. Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk ?Guts? is probably the most well-known story featured in Palahniuk?s 2005 novel Haunted; it?s infamous for its high fainting-factor during live readings. If body horror isn?t your thing, all you need to know is this: a teen boy experiments with the suction of his family?s swimming pool?s drainage system for pleasure. Things take a turn for the grisly. If this scenario sounds familiar, it might be because the Final Destination franchise similarly employed a pool drain to deadly effect a few years later in The Final Destination (2009). While it?s true that faulty drain covers can actually be dangerous, between ?Guts? and The Final Destination, you might find yourself a little more nervous than necessary next time you go to take a dip in the pool. Severance by Ling Ma Severance is easily the quietest horror on this list. It takes place in the aftermath of a fungal fever pandemic that leaves its infected trapped in mindless loops of behaviours that were routine before they got sick. It doesn?t sound so bad until you start to read scenes where various ?Fevered? are caught compulsively repeating mundane tasks, like setting a dinner table or doing their nightly skincare routine. Where Ling Ma gets you is with a one-two punch of familiarity and specificity that leaves you wondering which object at the core of your personal rituals will do you in. A few times she freaked me out just mentioning a specific moisturizer that I used to use. Severance creeps up on you, but it?s effective in that no single object is a source of horror?anything, even the most innocuous item on your shelf, might be a threat. While the summer season is usually when the big movie blockbusters come out, one of the most anticipated releases is season 4 of Stranger Things on Netflix. Fans have been eagerly awaiting the show’s return and are no doubt looking for similar shows and movies to enjoy as they prepare for the new season. Fans on Ranker have identified some of the things they feel Stranger Things viewers will also like. Some of the choices are expected, like certain projects that famously influenced the series. But some are more surprising selections that these fans feel capture some of the things that have made Stranger Things such a hit. SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY 10 It (2017) The influence of Stephen King on Stranger Things is no secret and the author’s horror novel It is the clearest inspiration for the show. In fact, the recent movie adaptation of King’s novel felt like a violent and scarier version of Stranger Things. RELATED: 10 Key Stranger Things Characters Most Likely To Die In Season 4 The movie follows a group of kids living in a small and disturbed town who find themselves targeted by an ancient and evil force that presents itself as a terrifying clown. While the sequel follows the kids as adults confronting this menace, the kid-focused first movie is the superior one. 9 Riverdale (2017-) Though the Archie comics were popular for a long time, few people expected that the television adaptation would be such a dark and moody teen drama. With a loose adaptation of the source material, Riverdale finds characters like Archie, Jughead, and the rest of the gang becoming entangled in the dark mysteries of their town as well as endless scandals. With the small-town setting and the likable cast of young heroes, it is not hard to see the similarities to Stranger Things. And while the show recently announced it will be ending, it provided one of the biggest surprises on television when it first aired. 8 American Horror Story (2011-) Part of the fun of Stranger Things is seeing the different horror movie aspects they draw on. While there have been a lot of monster movie aspects to the show, season 4 seems to be more of a paranormal story. There is a similar variety found in American Horror Story. The twisted and gruesome series is certainly more intense than Stranger Things but also leans into the campier aspects of the horror genre for some fun. It is an anthology series with each season telling a new and terrifying tale with many of the same actors playing different roles in each season. 7 Ghostbusters (1984) Stranger Things‘ success is less about the supernatural situations and more about seeing these likable characters dealing with those situations. That also made Ghostbusters a certified classic, along with its mix of humor and some horror elements. The movie follows a group of scientists who start a business hunting paranormal threats. Its influence on Stranger Things is also evident as the young heroes dress up as the Ghostbusters for Halloween in the show’s second season. 6 Wall-E (2008) Stranger Things is really effective at capturing a sense of wonder in the types of stories that spoke to a certain generation of kids. Perhaps that can explain why some feel that fans will also enjoy the Pixar adventure Wall-E. RELATED: 10 Best Stranger Things Episodes, According To Metacritic The animated movie follows the titular robot who is assigned to clean up the garbage-filled and abandoned Earth only to find an unexpected romance. The movie is a sweet, exciting, and moving adventure that shows why Pixar has spoken to a new generation of young viewers. 5 Westworld (2016-) Despite the fact that it is such a pop culture hit, Stranger Things is not something that can be easily put into one category. It is a sci-fi thriller, but it is also a comedy. It is a mystery, but it is also a coming-of-age story. Westworld is another show that captured the attention of fans with its genre-mashing. The sci-fi story with a Western twist is set within an Old West theme park where guests interact with androids to fulfill their wildest fantasies. But things get complicated when the androids begin realizing their world is not as it seems. 4 Jurassic Park (1993) Steven Spielberg is another huge influence on Stranger Things with movies like E.T. often being singled out as an obvious inspiration. However, the show might feel closer to his sci-fi adventure masterpiece Jurassic Park. The classic movie is set in a theme park that has brought dinosaurs into the modern era. Of course, things soon go wrong leading to the park guests running from these hungry and dangerous prehistoric creatures. That mix of monster horror with Spielberg adventure is something Stranger Things often strives for. 3 Black Mirror (2011-) It is very interesting how fans have found similarities between Stranger Things and Black Mirror as they can appear quite different. Stranger Things aims for the nostalgic feel of the 80s while Black Mirror takes an unsettling look into the future. RELATED: 10 Things Fans Don’t Want To See In Stranger Things Season 4, According To Reddit However, both projects have a lot of fun finding new ways to play with old and familiar sci-fi stories. Black Mirror is another anthology series with each new episode having a new set of actors and characters to explore the dark side of technology. 2 Jessica Jones (2015-2019) While there are a lot of fan-favorite characters on Stranger ThingsEleven has emerged as the show’s breakout star. And with a badass female hero with some impressive superpowers as the lead, it is not hard to see how some have made the connection to Jessica Jones. The Netflix Marvel show stars Kristen Ritter as a cynical private detective with super strength who spends her days solving cases and occasionally being a reluctant superhero. She makes for a unique and fun Marvel hero and it is not hard to see Eleven stepping into the world of the MCU. 1 The Goonies (1985) Stranger Things features a cast of likable young characters going off on an adventure that exposes them to a wild new world and plenty of danger. Throw in the 80s vibe and it is hard not to see how big of an influence The Goonies had on the show. This Amblin adventure may be less scary than Stranger Thingsbut it still captures that same sense of fun. It feels very much in the same spirit of that beloved movie and trying to give fans that same kind of adventure. After Halloween came out in 1978, it seemed impossible to imagine a more perfect time of year for a horror movie to take place. There’s the joy of trick or treating and dressing up and asking for candy, along with the excitement among teenagers about going to a party and hopefully having a fun night. But even though there are some unforgettable scary movies that happen on Halloween, including the beloved Trick ‘r Treat from 2007, there are some other horror movies worth checking out that are set during different holidays. GAMERANT VIDEO OF THE DAY From the Fourth of July to Christmas, there are some excellent horror movies that fans should watch when they want to see a killer stalking teens in the heat of summer or watch a film that might take place on December 24th but doesn’t have any holiday spirit. RELATED: 5 Overrated 2000s Horror Movies I Know What You Did Last Summer‘s Amazon TV series isn’t all that great, but there’s something perfectly nostalgic about the 1997 film. It’s also a great summer horror movie that features the Fourth of July. While the town of Southport, North Carolina wants to have some fun in the sun and celebrate this warm holiday, Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt) is, naturally, too busy with thinking about the killer on the loose who wants to get revenge on her and her friends. This small town looks like one of the best places to enjoy a summer vacation from college, which is what Julie should be doing, as it’s got a beautiful marina and peaceful water. Of course, the characters spend most of their time running from Ben Willis. While Valentine tends to be a forgotten 2000s horror movie, it’s enjoyable and also does a great job of spotlighting February 14th. The killer gets creative with this typically romantic (and often corny) holiday, delivering notes and killing people in the vein of Valentine’s Day. The killer, Jeremy Melton (pretending to be Adam Carr, played byDavid Boreanaz), gives Lily (Jessica Cauffiel) chocolates that have maggots inside of them and murders her with arrows, reminiscent of Cupid’s famous weapon. Jeremy also wears Cupid’s masks as his villain costume. It all works perfectly (but audiences might want to skip eating candy and chocolate while eating given what Jeremy does to Lily). If it wasn’t for the fact that this film is set around Valentine’s Day, it might be really forgettable, but this gives it an extra edge that helps it stand out. The Supernatural creator wrote the horror movie Boogeymanand while it’s not the most loved horror film ever, it has a fun story, a good main character, and is also set partly at Thanksgiving. Tim Jensen (Barry Watson) goes to his girlfriend Jessica’s (Tory Mussett) mom and dad’s place for Thanksgiving, then has a vision of his mom telling him that he should go to the home that he grew up in. After Tim finds out that his mom actually passed away, he does go back to his childhood house to see if he can stop the Boogeyman once and for all. While audiences are likely used to experiencing family drama during this late fall holiday, dealing with relatives is nothing compared to Tim’s journey. It’s definitely safe to say that Tim wishes that he could stay at Jessica’s family home for some turkey, stuffing and mashed potatoes and ignore this whole situation. The two Black Christmas remakes from 2006 and 2019 each manage to evoke that specific feeling of the winter holidays, although it’s possible to say that the 2006 remake is more engaging. In this movie, sorority sisters spend time during the Christmas break at the house that they share while being tormented by a killer. There’s one particularly gross scene that is a dark take on the holiday spirit: Billy (Robert Mann) bakes the remains of his mom into Christmas cookies. While the movie might not get anyone in a festive mood, it does offer up an interesting look at what can happen when a holiday turns horrible. The sorority house is beautiful and charming and would be the perfect spot to celebrate (if it wasn’t for Billy, that is). While there are some horror movies without any Christmas spirit, Better Watch Out brilliantly works with the themes surrounding December 25th and delivers a stunning story that fans can’t stop thinking about. Ashley (Olivia DeJonge) is babysitting Luke (Levi Miller), who seems totally sweet and innocent, if a bit creepy since he has a massive crush on her. While the movie seems straightforward, there is an incredible and unpredictable plot twist that fans will be talking about forever and that proves that making a Christmas horror movie should always be this fun, exciting, and unexpected. Firestarter has a problem: it constantly insists it?s a horror when it makes no sense as one. The Stephen King novel about a young girl with fire-starting abilities has been adapted twice for cinemas and has failed to impress the critics both times. In fact, the second iteration got worse reviews, a mighty feat when you consider how much room for improvement the original movie had. So why is it that the Firestarter movies just can?t seem to catch a break, despite many other Stephen King adaptations enjoying critical acclaim? Is it because the novel itself isn?t very good to begin with? Maybe so, but given that the 2022 film deviated quite a lot from the novel and still fell flat on its face, there must be more to it than that. The answer?s quite simple: Firestarter is trying desperately hard to be something it?s not, a horror movie. The novel, the 1984 adaptation, and the 2022 adaptation all feature the same premise: a couple once part of an experiment gives birth to a girl with the ability to start fires, and now they?re on the run from The Shop, the facility responsible for giving them powers. There are no ghosts here, no creepy clowns, no deranged killers ? instead, the main source of horror is supposed to come from Charlie and her pyrokinetic powers. Therein lies the main issue. Charlie, being the main source of horror, greatly conflicts with the fact that she?s also supposed to be the good guy, the one we?re supposed to be siding with. Both films try to make it so there?s some moral ambiguity on the use of Charlie?s powers, but it?s clear from the get go that even if Charlie is bad, the people from The Shop are still much worse. The people from The Shop are the ones with bad intentions, Charlie and her parents are just trying to live normal lives. Horror movie villains are very rarely the protagonists of their films for two good reasons. Firstly, horror movies thrive on suspense, thrill and anticipation. It?s why slasher films often have long scenes of characters just walking around and minding their own business. We know the killer can pop out at any time, but they don?t, and the eagerness of waiting for the killer to reveal themselves while the character is none the wiser puts us on the edge of our seats. Secondly, because the protagonist is the victim of the situation, we?re not just scared by the villain, we?re also scared for the protagonist. Most of the time, they?re just ordinary human beings faced with a threat they never imagined they?d encounter. It?s why final girls are such popular horror movie characters. Nobody wants to be the victim of killers like Jason Voorhees or Freddy Kreuger, so seeing a regular human being just like us being hunted down is terrifying, and watching them outsmart the villain is satisfying as hell. Both these factors are completely absent when it comes to either Firestarter film. There is no thrill or suspense ? the audience knows exactly where Charlie is at all times and what she plans to do. How can you be scared of a person you?re also actively rooting for? You can?t ? when Charlie?s using her powers to escape from the bad guys, you?re not frightened by her, you?re cheering her on. You know there?s nothing sinister about her intentions, she?s just trying to protect herself and her dad. Arguably, the only thing Charlie does with bad intentions is injure her mom. In the 1984 film, we start off believing Charlie burned her mom to death when in reality, all she did was burn her arms ? unintentionally, too, since Charlie really only did so because of a tantrum. This scene doesn?t come across as scary and instead is just more confirmation that Charlie is meant to be the lesser of two evils, the one we?re supposed to be rooting for. ?She didn?t mean to burn her mom,? the film is saying. ?She?s just a kid who, like all kids, can?t always control her emotions. It?s The Shop who killed Charlie?s mom. It?s The Shop who are the villains.? In the 2022 film, Charlie unintentionally burns her mom?s arms again, but completely gone is the implication that she could?ve been capable of killing her mom. This scene is really only there to get Charlie and her dad out of the house, therefore allowing Rainbird to sneak in and kill her mom. Again, all we get here is that Rainbird and The Shop are the evil ones. There?s no threat of Charlie becoming worse and descending into evil like Carrie White from Carrie or Jack Torrance from The Shining because you know the story can?t work if that happens. In many ways, both Firestarter movies try hard to be the next Carrie, but where Carrie still gave us space to feel frightened for Carrie?s victims ? they are still teenagers after all, even if they are bullies, and they aren?t aware of Carrie?s powers ? that space is completely absent in Firestarter. The Shop is fully aware of Charlie?s powers. They know what she?s capable of and yet still proceed to chase after her in order to lock her up and study her. How can the film expect us to hate The Shop for most of the movie and then, when the climax begins, we?re expected to feel frightened for them? Even if Charlie can use her powers to kill them, well, why wouldn?t we want Charlie to kill them? None of them are good people. None of them are victims of the situation. They all work for an evil facility hell bent on keeping Charlie and her dad locked up. This facility was responsible for killing Charlie?s mom and forcing Charlie and her dad to go on the run. Why wouldn?t we want Charlie to take them down if it means she?s going to be able to escape? In many ways, both Firestarters are prime examples of how not to write a horror film. Perhaps there is a good film in Firestarter ? maybe as a Spielberg-esque science fiction action film ? but as a horror film, it just comes across as the film version of a poser. Both film versions struggle hard to deliver scares, and while there?s something noteworthy about filmmakers taking the challenge of turning what should be the horror movie villain into the sympathetic protagonist, the problem is, it never really succeeds. We would like to say thanks to the writer of this article for this outstanding content Why Firestarter Never Works as a Horror Film - Summer movie guide: From ?Thor? to ?Lightyear? to ?Nope?
For the first time since 2019, we’re getting an honest-to-goodness summer of movies. There were some blockbuster titles last year but studios remained uncertain if we were ready to return to in-person viewing, so many top titles were held back. This year, they’re rolling the dice, with even Pixar ? which opted to release its past few titles on Disney Plus instead of at multiplexes ? heading back to theaters with “Lightyear.” Because teenage boys are both the largest moviegoing demographic and the most willing to visit theaters, releases have been weighted toward their superheroes-and-serial-killers interests, but there’s something for everybody this summer. Well, almost everybody; if you like romantic comedies, you’ll have to wait until fall for Julia Roberts and George Clooney in “Ticket to Paradise.” Meanwhile, here are the top titles you can have a chance to see in theaters, with a couple of streaming biggies thrown in. Adventure “Top Gun: Maverick”: If the 1986 “Top Gun” were a person, numerologists would argue he’s facing a big transition, the author of “Your Best Life at Any Age” would say he’s finally an adult and his knees would say maybe it’s time to ease up on the beach volleyball. In other words, four decades is a long time between chapters but, apparently, Tom Cruise is still flying into the danger zone. May 27 “Jurassic World Dominion”: We’ll keep getting these until humans figure out the answer to the question, “Should I open the door of the velociraptor cage?” is “Hell, no!” This time, the dinosaurs rage all over the world. June 10 “Thor: Love and Thunder”: Christian Bale enters the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a maniac who’s trying to de-godify the world. Thor (Chris Hemsworth), understandably, objects and he enlists his ex (Natalie Portman) to help him. Director Taika Waititi brought a light touch to the last “Thor” and he’s back. July 8 “Day Shift”: Jamie Foxx is a pool cleaner by day, vampire smiter by night. Aug. 12 (Netflix) “Three Thousand Years of Longing”: It stars Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba, which is great, but what you really need to know is the writer/director is George Miller, whose previous film, “Mad Max: Fury Road,” is the best movie of this century. Aug. 31 Comedy “The Bob’s Burgers Movie”: Fans of the long-running animated series about a family-owned restaurant: It’s finally here. Newcomers: Watch the restaurant’s specials board for meaty puns. May 27 “Fire Island”: We’ve seen Jane Austen adapted for teenagers (“Clueless”) and Bollywood (“Bride and Prejudice”). So why not for a bunch of friends hanging out in the East Coast gay enclave in a take on “Pride and Prejudice,” written by and starring hot comic Joel Kim Booster? June 3 “Phantom of the Open”: Oscar winner Mark Rylance stars in one of those low-key, fact-based British comedies about a bunch of working stiffs with an against-the-odds dream (see, also, “The Full Monty” and last year’s “Dream Alliance”). He plays a duffer who longs to play in the British Open. June 16 “Mr. Malcolm’s List”: The list tallies up all the qualities the Victorian gentleman requires in a successful wife. The women who don’t meet his requirements get together to exact their revenge. July 1 “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris”: Lesley Manville, an Oscar nominee for “Phantom Thread,” returns to the world of 1950s couture as a plucky, British cleaning lady who is determined to get herself some Dior. It’s based on a delightful series of novels by Paul Gallico so, if it’s good, there could be three sequels in a jiffy. July 15 “Easter Sunday”: The release date is confusing but, if you can get past that, get ready for a comedy/drama about a big Filipino clan. Aug. 5 “Honk for Jesus, Save Your Soul”: Regina Hall got rave reviews at the Sundance Film Festival for her performance as a woman trying to help her preacher husband (Sterling K. Brown) pick up the pieces after a scandal threatens their church. Sept. 2 Documentary “Jazz Fest: A New Orleans Story”: The 2019 music festival is an occasion to look back on the event’s 50-year history (and perhaps capitalize on the success of last year’s “Summer of Soul”). June 6 Drama “Montana Story”: Estranged siblings bicker about their ailing father, a beloved horse and what to do with the family ranch that’s about to be repossessed. Not a lot of laughs here, folks. May 27 “Hustle”: The odd couple of Adam Sandler and Robert Duvall stars in the story of a basketball phenom and the industry veterans who exploit him in the guise of helping him. June 3 theaters; June 8 Netflix “Brian and Charles”: Like the drama “After Yang” from earlier this year and Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel “Klara and the Sun,” it investigates the bond (or lack of one) between humans and their artificially intelligent companions. June 17 “Cha Cha Real Smooth”: The first of two titles that debuted at Sundance, spotlight a possible romance between a young man and an older woman and open this same weekend, this one’s about a bar mitzvah host who sparks something in a single mom (Dakota Johnson). June 17 “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande”: Emma Thompson hires a young sex worker only to discover she’s not wired for the easy pleasure she was hoping for. June 17 “Elvis”: Presley, not Costello, incidentally. Baz Luhrmann gives the glitzy “Moulin Rouge” treatment to the biography of the King (newcomer Austin Butler) and his Svengali, Tom Parker (Tom Hanks, wearing a lot of prosthetics). June 24 “Don’t Make Me Go”: That title has a double meaning. John Cho plays a single dad who learns he has a fatal brain tumor and who forces his daughter to accompany him on a road trip during which he’ll impart all his wisdom. July 15 “Where the Crawdads Sing”: “Normal People” breakout star Daisy Edgar-Jones steps into an adaptation of Delia Owen’s blockbuster novel, a melodrama about a woman and the man who abused her. July 15 Family “Lightyear”: The “Toy Story” astronaut gets his own starring vehicle, as well as a makeover and a new voice (Chris Evans). June 17 “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On”: Jenny Slate turns her daffy children’s series into a daffy movie. On June 24 “Minions: The Rise of Gru”: Gru Who? The chirpy yellow creatures have always been the stars of the “Despicable Me” Cinematic Universe (although Steve Carell does return as the voice of the not-so-despicable Gru). July 1 “Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank”: A dog wants to be a samurai. And this cartoon wants to be “Kung Fu Panda.” July 15 “DC League of Super-Pets”: Another animated dog with superheroic dreams is at the center of this one. He’s Superman’s best friend and he needs to save the Man of Steel when things get ruff. July 29 “Secret Headquarters”: A kid discovers a hidden superhero lair in his house. Does it belong to his dad? Owen Wilson stars, as does Michael Peña, one of those actors who brightens everything he’s in. Aug. 5 Horror “Bodies Bodies Bodies”: If the snarky title doesn’t clue you in that this is a horror/comedy hybrid, please note that the poster for the movie about a serial killer crashing a house party uses an approximation of the “Scream” font. Aug. 5 “Crimes of the Future”: Before its debut at the Cannes Film Festival, director David Cronenberg was already predicting his film would inspire walkouts. Starring Viggo Mortensen and Kristen Stewart, it’s set in a near-future when human organs are rapidly evolving. June 10 “Nope”: Whenever the injustices faced by Black people lead them into scary movies with succinct titles, writer/director Jordan Peele (“Get Out,” “Us”) will be there. Details on the plot are hush-hush, but the trailer hints that invaders from space are involved. July 22 “Resurrection”: Writer/director Andrew Semans is the sick mind behind a horror movie that stars Rebecca Hall. The Minneapolis native cast Hall as a professor who’s being stalked by a shockingly evil dude form her past (Tim Roth). Aug. 5 Thrillers “The Black Phone”: Ethan Hawke plays a sadist holding an adolescent boy hostage in this adaptation of a story by Joe “son of Steven King” Hill. The twist? A phone connects the kid to the sadist’s previous victims, who try to help him escape. June 24 “Bed Rest”: Shades of the classic “Sorry, Wrong Number” is in this one about a woman, confined to her bed, who’s being driven mad by an intruder. July 15 “The Gray Man”: Chris Evans notches his second credit of summer alongside Ryan Gosling in a melodrama about warring CIA operatives. July 15 theaters; Netflix July 22 “Vengeance”: B.J. Novak wrote, directed and stars as a man who finds evil doings when he tries to figure out what happened to his missing girlfriend. July 29 “Bullet Train”: My entire movie summer may hinge on whether this is as riveting as it looks. Brad Pitt, Brian Tyree Henry and Joey King are riding on a train where most of the ticketed passengers are killers. And they’re probably supposed to kill one another. Aug. 5 “Beast”: Specifically, the beast is a lion. It would like to eat a doctor played by the obviously delicious Idris Elba. Aug. 19 “The Bride”: A destination wedding turns out to be a terrifying nightmare. We’ve all been there, right? Movie previews are a big staple of the cinema world. For decades, people have seen a movie at the theater, watching trailers for upcoming releases play on the screen before showtime. Some people love them, while some aren?t huge fans and would instead jump headfirst into the movie they bought tickets for. Whatever you think about them, it?s essential to know how long movie previews are for planning purposes and create a more enjoyable experience. So, how long are movie previews? While people might exaggerate movie times, AMC reports that their previews last about 20 minutes. This could range between 5-8 trailers within those 20 minutes. In the end, the amount of previews shown is dependent on the length of the trailers themselves. Does movie runtime include previews? When you go to select movie showtime or look down at you?re printed ticket, the time listed also includes previews. AMC says? The feature film does not start at the published showtime.? This also means that the film duration does not include the trailers that play before the movie starts. For instance, if a new movie release says it is 2 hours long, and the showing begins at 8 p.m., the film will finish at 10:20 p.m. vs. 10 p.m. Why do theaters have previews? What?s the significance of movie previews? In many cases, a movie?s success is determined by how much money is made at the box office. For a film to make money, they need people to see it physically in theaters. How do you entice people to watch a movie? A trailer is the best bet. Sure, you can find trailers of films online, but it?s easy to avoid them. When an audience is in a movie theater, they are forced to watch the previews. This help brings attention and buzz to an upcoming release. You might have noticed that each film you see has movie previews of a similar genre. Slate reports that studios and theaters use the quadrant system ?which divides potential audiences into four different categories: men under 25, women under 25, men over 25, and women over 25.? If you?re seeing a romantic comedy, you?ll most likely see trailers that are related to romance and comedy. A scary movie will show more previews related to horror and thrillers. Movie previews: Yay or Nay? Many movie-watchers, like myself, love going to the movie theaters because of the previews. While we might be at the movies to watch a new release, we always love seeing what big blockbuster films are coming next. unpopular opinion: i love watching the previews at the movies ? Savannah Wood (@Savanjwood) March 22, 2019 I hate when people you?re going to a movie with are like, ?don?t worry if we are late, there?s 15 minutes of previews?? I like watching the previews in a theatre, that?s why I?m on time! – James Cullen Bressack (@JamesCullenB) August 30, 2018 Although some people worry very little about missing previews due to coming late to a screening, other fans strive to get there on time. If you want to catch trailers before your movie, make sure you get there on time and go with someone who likes to be early to things. Of course, there are those out there who prefer screenings without previews. For them, it ruins the movie-going experience and spoils another film they were excited to see. Going to a movie that you?re like excited for but not crazy excited, watching the previews that look way cooler and more interesting than the one you?re seeing is a special kind of pain. ? db (@imm_destiny) May 18, 2022 Idk if it?s jus me but I truly hate watching previews of a show or movie lmaoo I wanna go in without a clue of what?s gonna happen ? ? Máskira?i Uúka ? (@ELXICO111) February 14, 2022 For a lot of the general population, movie previews are enjoyable. I know it?s silly but i?ll really sit on Youtube and watch an hour & half of movie previews instead of a movie. It?s like previews showcase the best parts of the movie anyways. lol. ?
